Find out how the companions prepared for Ramadan

When we think of preparing for Ramadan, we usually think of organizing markets or iftar parties. However, the companions’ way of preparing for Ramadan was completely different. For them, this month was the best opportunity to get closer to Allah Almighty.

The anxiety started six months ago.

The greatest characteristic of the life of the Companions was their long-term planning. The renowned Tabi’i Mu’alla bin Fadl said, “The Companions used to pray to Allah for six months of the year to let them reach Ramadan. And after Ramadan ended, they used to pray for the next five months so that Allah would accept their deeds. In other words, their entire year revolved around Ramadan.

Shaban Month: Quran Recitation Practice

The Companions would prepare for the main act of Ramadan, i.e., reciting the Quran, from the month of Shaban. When the month of Shaban began, Amr bin Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) would stop his business and devote his full time to the Quran.

They used to say, “Sha’ban is the month of reciters,” as if the long recitations of Ramadan were not tiring for them, but rather a source of peace.

Mental preparation for sin

The Companions believed that sin hardens the heart and diminishes the taste of worship. Therefore, before Ramadan, they would purify their souls through repentance and seeking forgiveness. So that they would be worthy of receiving the special mercy of Allah on the first night of Ramadan.

The practice of charity

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to be more generous than the wind during Ramadan. His companions also followed this Sunnah and used to open their hands before Ramadan. This mindset of seeking Allah’s pleasure by relieving the suffering of others made their Ramadan more lively.

Our lessons from the Companions’ Ramadan

Following the companions, we can also take some steps:

Mental resolution: Decide in your heart from today that this Ramadan will be the best Ramadan of your life.

Affinity with the Quran: Start the habit of reciting now.

Avoid unnecessary tasks: Reduce time on social media or chatting and make time for worship.

Only if we can have even a little bit of the concentration and devotion of the Companions, will our fasting be successful.
